Google Business Profile for rehab centers: complete setup + what gets you suspended

Updated August 2026 · 11 min read · By Carlos Meza

Google Business Profile is the highest-leverage free channel a rehab has. The local pack shows above organic results on ~60% of "rehab near me" queries, and a properly optimized GBP drives 15-30% of a treatment center's total inquiries. It costs nothing. The catch: addiction treatment is a high-risk category, video verification is mandatory, and one wrong move gets your listing suspended. Full setup guide plus the 7 mistakes that kill treatment center GBPs below.

Why GBP matters more than you think

Most rehab operators spend $10K-$30K/month on Google Ads and treat GBP as an afterthought. That's backwards. The real numbers:

It's free. Highest ROI activity on your list. If GBP isn't set up right, everything else you're doing is leaking money.

Step-by-step setup

1. Business name — use your legal name, nothing else

The #1 rookie mistake. Your business name field should say exactly what your business is legally called. Not "Best Rehab Near Me — Fast Detox — Insurance Accepted." Not "Serenity Recovery Center | Alcohol & Drug Rehab | Miami FL." Just the legal name. Google's guidelines are explicit: keyword stuffing in the business name is a suspension trigger. Competitors report each other for this constantly. If your name field has anything beyond your legal DBA, you're on borrowed time.

2. Primary category — pick one, get it right

For rehab, the primary category is almost always "Addiction treatment center". For dual-diagnosis or mental-health-focused facilities, "Mental health service" is the alternative. You can add up to 9 secondary categories, but the primary is what Google uses to decide which searches you show up for. Do not pick "Medical Center" or "Hospital" to appear more legitimate — it gets flagged for mismatch and hurts ranking.

3. NAP consistency — boring, and it matters

Your Name, Address, and Phone must match exactly across your website, GBP, Yelp, Psychology Today, Rehab.com, SAMHSA, and every other directory. Every variation ("Suite 200" vs "Ste 200", "Ave" vs "Avenue", parenthesized vs dashed phone) reduces Google's confidence in your data. Use BrightLocal, Whitespark, or Moz Local to audit citations. Bad NAP is a top reason treatment center listings get suspended — Google reads it as "data unreliable = probably shady."

4. Service area, hours, phone, website

If clients come to your facility, set service area by city radius (typically 25-50 miles). If you serve specific cities beyond that, list them explicitly. Don't stuff 50 cities — Google penalizes obvious gaming. Hours should be 24/7 for admissions if you have an on-call intake line. Phone should be a unique local number (not shared with another location, not a call center number). Website should link to a location-specific landing page — if you have three facilities, each GBP links to its own page, not your shared homepage.

Verification: the video walkthrough is the new gate

Google used to send a postcard with a verification code. That still exists for some categories (1-2 weeks to arrive). For addiction treatment — a high-risk vertical — Google now requires video verification in almost all cases.

What the video needs to show, in one continuous take:

Google reviews the video in 3-5 business days. Failing the video means immediate suspension, not a chance to redo it. If the license isn't clearly shown or the signage doesn't match the business name, you're done — and you're now in an appeals process instead of a normal setup.

Do the video right the first time. Steady phone, decent lighting, one continuous shot, license and signage on camera for 3-5 seconds each. Half the suspensions we help facilities recover from started with a rushed 30-second video that didn't show the license clearly.

What to actually put on the profile

Photos

Upload 15-30 real photos. Not stock — Google's algorithm can tell, users can tell, and stock correlates with lower conversion. Include: exterior (from the street, showing signage), common areas (lobby, group therapy, dining, outdoor space), staged bedrooms (no patients), staff photos with names and credentials in the caption, and amenities if you have them. Refresh photos monthly. GBPs with fresh photo activity rank better than static profiles.

Services list — be specific

Don't just write "addiction treatment." List every level of care individually: Medical detox, Residential (30/60/90 day), PHP, IOP, Outpatient counseling, Dual diagnosis, MAT, Family therapy, Aftercare. Each service gets its own entry with a 2-3 sentence description. This helps Google match your listing to specific queries ("PHP in Miami" instead of just "rehab in Miami").

Attributes

Attributes are the tags on your profile that filter you into specific searches — LGBTQ+ friendly, Veteran-friendly, Women-only or men-only, Wheelchair accessible, Accepts insurance, Faith-based, Spanish-speaking staff. Check every one that legitimately applies. These appear as filters when users search — "LGBTQ+ friendly rehab near me" pulls a much smaller pool of listings, and being tagged is the whole ballgame.

Q&A — seed it yourself

Random users can post questions on your GBP and anyone can answer. If you don't seed it, competitors and confused visitors will. Add 8-12 questions and answer them yourself as the business. Cover: insurance accepted, program length, daily schedule, phone policy, family visits, cost, on-site detox, success rate.

Google Reviews: the #1 local ranking factor

Review count and average rating are the biggest local pack ranking factors after basic relevance. A facility with 80 reviews at 4.7 stars will outrank one with 12 reviews at 4.9 stars almost every time in the same market.

How to build reviews compliantly:

What NOT to do: don't buy reviews (Google detects it, health categories get suspended fast), don't filter negative reviews by pre-screening, don't have staff/friends/family write reviews (IP and account patterns are detected — one 5-star from a staff member's home address triggers an audit on the whole profile), and don't offer incentives (prohibited by Google and the FTC).

The 7 things that get rehab GBPs suspended

  1. Multiple listings for the same facility. One legal facility = one GBP. Duplicates (often created accidentally when someone claims the auto-generated profile) violate guidelines and get both suspended.
  2. Keyword stuffing in the business name. "Serenity Recovery — Best Rehab in Miami — Insurance Accepted" is a suspension waiting to happen. Legal name only.
  3. Virtual office or PO box address. Rehab GBPs must be a licensed, staffed, physical treatment location. Regus offices, mail forwarding, and residential addresses without a signed facility all get flagged.
  4. Service categories that don't match your state license. If your license authorizes IOP only and your GBP claims residential and detox, Google's review team cross-references and pulls the listing.
  5. Failed video verification. Facility in the video doesn't match what was submitted — wrong address visible, no license on the wall, signage doesn't match the business name. Immediate suspension, no second video.
  6. Fake or paid reviews. Google's review-integrity system is more aggressive on health categories than anywhere else. Bulk suspicious reviews from new accounts, staff-IP reviews, or unnatural language patterns trigger a full-profile audit.
  7. Bad NAP consistency across other directories. Phone (305) 555-1234 on GBP, 305.555.1234 on Yelp, 305-555-1235 (typo) on Psychology Today — Google reads that as "data unreliable." Enough inconsistency plus one competitor report and you're suspended.

How to appeal a suspension

Suspended listings can be recovered if the underlying business is legitimate. The process:

  1. In your GBP dashboard, click the "Request reinstatement" link on the suspension notice.
  2. Fill out the form. Be specific about what changed if you already fixed the underlying issue.
  3. Attach documentation — this is where most appeals succeed or fail: proof of state license (current), proof of accreditation (CARF or Joint Commission), photos of exterior signage showing your business name, a utility bill at the address from the last 90 days, business filing docs (Articles of Incorporation, EIN letter, DBA), and any extras (NAATP membership, state credentials).
  4. Wait 3-14 days for Google's response.
  5. If denied, appeal again with additional evidence. Most legitimate facilities are reinstated on the second or third try.

If you're on your third denial and still stuck, the issue is usually: (a) unresolved keyword stuffing you didn't remove, (b) NAP inconsistencies you didn't clean up first, or (c) an address Google's reviewer decided doesn't visibly function as a treatment facility. Fix the root cause, then appeal again.

Multi-location rehabs: read this carefully

Each licensed facility needs its own GBP. Full stop. What that means in practice:

Advanced tactics once the basics are in place

Google Posts — weekly

Posts show up on your GBP for 7 days. Use them for updates, events, anonymized alumni stories, new program announcements, insurance updates. Weekly cadence keeps your profile active. Skipping posts for a month noticeably drops profile engagement metrics.

Booking button + Products + Services

Add a booking button that links to your intake form, calendar, or admissions phone. Booking button clicks are a tracked conversion in your GBP insights. The Products section (originally retail) works for service businesses too — list each program with a description and photo. In the Services section, write 2-3 sentence descriptions using natural language people actually search. "Medical detox" should read something like "Medically supervised detox for alcohol, opioids, and benzos. On-site 24/7 nursing. Typical length of stay 5-7 days." Most competitors leave these sections empty. Free real estate.

What a fully optimized rehab GBP looks like

Hit all of those and you'll be in the local pack for primary city queries within 60-90 days, assuming no active suspension. 15-30% more inquiries, zero incremental ad spend.

Frequently asked questions

How long does Google Business Profile verification take for a rehab?

Postcard verification takes 1-2 weeks to arrive. Video verification (now required for addiction treatment and other high-risk categories) is reviewed by Google in 3-5 business days after you submit the walkthrough. If the video is rejected, you can resubmit but each failed attempt increases the chance of full suspension.

Can I have one Google Business Profile for multiple rehab locations?

No. Each licensed facility needs its own separate Google Business Profile with a unique physical address and a unique phone number. Sharing a phone number across locations is one of the top triggers for suspension. Each location also needs its own individual verification, including its own video walkthrough.

Why did Google suspend my rehab's Business Profile?

The most common reasons are: keyword stuffing in the business name, using a virtual office or PO box, failed video verification because the facility doesn't match what was submitted, service categories that don't match the state license, duplicate listings for the same facility, fake or paid reviews, and inconsistent NAP data across other directories. Google is aggressive about health category enforcement.

How do I appeal a Google Business Profile suspension?

Submit the reinstatement request form with proof of state license, proof of accreditation (CARF or Joint Commission), photos of exterior signage, a recent utility bill at the address, and business filing documents. Response time is 3-14 days. If denied on the first try, appeal again with additional documentation. Most legitimate facilities are reinstated on the second or third attempt.

How much of a rehab's inquiries actually come from Google Business Profile?

For treatment centers with a properly optimized profile, GBP drives 15-30% of total inquiries. The local pack shows above organic search results on roughly 60% of "rehab near me" searches, which makes GBP one of the highest-leverage free channels available to a treatment center.

Can I ask patients or alumni for Google reviews?

Yes, but only in a HIPAA-compliant way. You cannot identify someone as a patient without written authorization, and you cannot pressure them. The clean approach is a discharge-day ask via a neutral request that leaves the choice entirely to the alumnus. Do not offer incentives, do not have staff write reviews, and never buy reviews. Google detects fake review patterns and health-category listings get suspended fast.
