AI SEO for rehab centers, also called AEO, is SEO for answer engines. It means making your pages easy for Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude to find, read and cite. Start with what the platforms say themselves. Google says AI Overviews have "no additional requirements" beyond normal SEO.
OpenAI, Perplexity and Anthropic each ask sites to allow their search crawlers in robots.txt. After that, the work is answer-first pages, real authors, facts with sources, and a current Google Business Profile. There is no secret file or schema that gets a rehab cited.
Written for treatment center owners and marketing directors who searched their own center in ChatGPT, didn't find it, and want to know what to do.
What is AEO?
Classic SEO tries to rank a page in the list of links. AEO tries to get your page used as a source inside an AI answer, with your name or link attached. The same page can do both.
Why does AEO matter now?
Pew Research Center tracked the browsing of 900 US adults in March 2025. It found:
- 18% of the Google searches in the study produced an AI summary.
- When an AI summary appeared, users clicked a regular search result in 8% of visits. Without one, they clicked in 15% of visits.
- Users clicked a link inside the AI summary in just 1% of visits.
- 88% of AI summaries cited three or more sources.
- Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit were the most cited sources in AI summaries and in regular results.
Our read: when an AI summary shows, fewer people click through, so being named inside the answer matters more.
Why rehab is held to a higher bar
Google says its systems give even more weight to strong E-E-A-T on topics that "could significantly impact the health, financial stability, or safety of people." Google calls these "Your Money or Your Life" topics. Addiction treatment is one. Google's own checklist asks: "Do pages carry a byline, where one might be expected?"
Where RehabAdmit stands today
We hold ourselves to the same test. On September 30, 2026, we ran 26 prompts about rehab marketing agencies through ChatGPT and Gemini, and 10 of them through Perplexity. That gave 60 usable answers. RehabAdmit was named in 1 of the 60. The one mention came from our own agency comparison page. Webserv was named in 26 answers.
We share this so you can see what an honest baseline looks like. Most centers we talk to have never measured theirs.
The 5-step AEO playbook for treatment centers
Step 1: Let AI search crawlers in
Each AI platform publishes its search crawler and asks sites to allow it:
- OpenAI: "To help ensure your site appears in search results, we recommend allowing OAI-SearchBot in your site's robots.txt file."
- Perplexity: "To ensure your site appears in search results, we recommend allowing PerplexityBot in your site's robots.txt file."
- Anthropic: blocking Claude-SearchBot "may reduce your site's visibility and accuracy in user search results."
Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and confirm none of these are blocked. Check your firewall or CDN bot settings too.
What about llms.txt? It is a proposal by Jeremy Howard, first published September 3, 2024, for a markdown file that helps AI agents use a site. Google says "You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup" to appear in its AI features. We found no public statement from OpenAI, Anthropic or Perplexity that their search crawlers read it. It takes little time to publish, so it is fine to have. Just don't expect it to get you cited.
Step 2: Write answer-first pages
Put the direct answer in the first two or three sentences of each page and each section. Then back it up. Write the way a family member would ask: "Does Aetna cover residential detox?" "How long is medical detox?" "What is the difference between PHP and IOP?"
On schema, keep expectations honest:
- Google says there is "no special schema.org structured data that you need to add" for AI features.
- Since August 2023, Google shows FAQ rich results "only for well-known, authoritative government and health websites."
- Google's rules say "Don't mark up content that is not visible to readers of the page."
FAQPage markup still describes your questions and answers in a clean format. Use it, keep it identical to the visible text, and don't treat it as a shortcut.
Step 3: Earn mentions on other sites
AI answers draw on sources beyond your own site. Ways to show up there:
- Directories with flat fees. Psychology Today charges treatment centers "a fixed monthly fee of $49.00." Recovery.com says it does "not take referral fees of any kind from providers" and doesn't sell leads.
- Original data. Publish numbers only your center has, such as average length of stay by level of care. Data gives other sites a reason to link to you.
- Real community answers. Pew found Reddit among the most cited sources. Answer real questions where your clinicians can help, follow each community's rules, and never post as a fake patient.
Keep any paid placement on a flat fee. Federal law (EKRA) makes it a crime to pay anyone to induce a referral to a treatment facility, and its exception for employees and contractors only protects pay that doesn't vary with the number of referrals. Many states add their own patient brokering laws. That holds whatever the channel.
Step 4: Keep your Google Business Profile current
Google's guide to AI features lists "Checking that your Merchant Center and Business Profile information is up-to-date" among its basics. For a rehab, that means:
- The most specific main category that fits. Google says to pick a specific category over a general one.
- Hours, phone, website and levels of care that match your site
- Real photos of your facility and staff
- A steady flow of genuine reviews
Skip the old advice to pre-load Q&A. Google discontinued the Business Profile Q&A API on November 3, 2025 while it reworks the feature. See our GBP suspension guide for the compliance side of a rehab profile.
Step 5: Measure it
Track two things.
Traffic. Google Analytics 4 added an AI Assistant channel on May 13, 2026. Per Google's channel definitions, it covers visits "from sources like ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot, or Grok" and "excludes Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode." Google counts AI Overview and AI Mode visits in the Search Console Performance report under "Web."
Mentions. Once a month, run the same 15 to 25 buyer questions through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. Log, for each answer:
- Named: does the answer mention your center?
- Cited: does your domain appear in the sources?
- Which competitors were named
Answers vary from run to run, so watch the trend over months, not one sweep.
| What to track | Where |
|---|---|
| Visits from ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and others | GA4, AI Assistant channel |
| Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode | Search Console, Performance report, Web |
| Named and cited rate on buyer questions | Your monthly sweep log |
| Calls and VOBs from AI referrals | Call tracking and your CRM |
What should you avoid?
- Mass-produce AI pages. Google says "Appropriate use of AI or automation is not against our guidelines," but using it mainly to manipulate search rankings breaks its spam policies.
- Hide text in schema. Mark up only what readers can see.
- Invent facts. A made-up statistic can get repeated by AI tools and traced back to you. In a YMYL field, Google says content "must be highly accurate and consistent with established expert consensus." Cite SAMHSA, NIH, NIDA or CDC with real links.
- Drop classic SEO. Google says the same SEO basics apply to its AI features. If Google can't crawl and rank your pages, AEO won't save them.

Frequently asked questions
What is AI SEO for rehab centers?
AI SEO, also called AEO, is SEO for answer engines. It means making your treatment center's pages easy for Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude to find, read and cite. Google says its AI features have no extra requirements beyond normal SEO, so the work is crawler access, answer-first pages, real authors, sourced facts and a current Google Business Profile.
Why does AEO matter for rehab?
Fewer people click when an AI summary shows. Pew Research found users clicked a regular result in 8% of visits with an AI summary and 15% without one. Addiction treatment is also a "Your Money or Your Life" topic, where Google gives more weight to strong E-E-A-T: clear authors, real experience and accurate facts.
What is llms.txt and does my rehab site need one?
llms.txt is a proposed markdown file, first published by Jeremy Howard in 2024, that helps AI agents use a site. Google says you don't need AI text files to appear in its AI features, and we found no public statement from OpenAI, Anthropic or Perplexity that their search crawlers read it. It is fine to publish one. Allowing OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot in robots.txt matters more, because each company says so.
How do I know if AI is citing my rehab site?
Use two measures. GA4's AI Assistant channel shows visits from ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and similar tools, and Search Console counts AI Overviews and AI Mode under Web search. Then run the same 15 to 25 buyer questions through each AI tool every month and log whether your center is named and whether your domain is cited.
Is AEO replacing traditional SEO for rehab centers?
No. Google says the same SEO basics apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode. AEO adds steps on top: crawler access for AI search bots, answer-first writing and outside mentions. If your classic SEO is broken, fix it first. See our rehab SEO playbook.
Does FAQ schema get my rehab cited by AI?
Not on its own. Google says no special schema is needed for its AI features. Since August 2023, it shows FAQ rich results only for well-known, authoritative government and health websites. FAQ markup still describes your answers cleanly, so use it, and keep it identical to the visible text.
